Gainesville City Council Tuesday night approved a request to rename Touchdown Drive off Queen City Parkway after Gainesville High School and Clemson University football standout Deshaun Watson.
City Manager Bryan Lackey said there's a second reading on the request on Feb. 21, but he expects it to pass with no problem.
Lackey said the sign will be red with white letters. In addition, council asked that the signs for Billy Lothridge Blvd. be changed to the same color scheme.
Both Watson and Lothridge, who passed away in 1996, graduated from Gainesville High School and both finished as runners-up for the Heisman Trophy during their college careers. Lothridge went on to a career in the NFL - Watson is expected to be drafted this year.
"Our crews will be ready to have the new signs up in time for the unveiling on Feb. 26 at the GHS [125th] anniversary celebration," Lackey said via email.
