Juvenile McDonald's employee charged with scalding co-worker

CLARKESVILLE — A juvenile employee of McDonald's in Clarkesville has been referred to an Atlanta burn center after a co-worker poured a cup of hot coffee on her, scalding her back and torso.

The incident happened about 6 p.m. Monday, nearly four hours before being reported to Clarkesville police at 9:45 p.m.

When police arrived, the victim already had been transported to Habersham Medical Center for treatment. She underwent treatment there and was released, but was referred to a burn center in Atlanta, said Clarkesville Police Chief Brad Barrett on Tuesday.

"Essentially, we responded to a call after the fact … of a juvenile female who had been in an altercation with another juvenile female at McDonald's, in the restaurant," Barrett said. "They were both employees of the restaurant."

Barrett said the initial investigation showed the two girls were arguing over the offending female's boyfriend.

"The offending female threw a milkshake at an employee and struck her, and then proceeded to douse her with a hot cup of coffee on her back and on her torso," Barrett said.

When the victim attempted to walk away is when the offender poured the cup of coffee on her, according to Barrett.

"Due to the actions of the offender, the victim received significant injuries to her back and torso from the high temperature of the heated liquid," Barrett said. Barrett said he didn't know the degree of the burns.

When Clarkesville police went to the offending teen's home a short time later, she fled on foot through the back door. She was apprehended later and charged with aggravated assault.

Because of the age of those involved, police are not releasing names.

The case remains under investigation.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has knowledge of what happened is asked to contact Clarkesville Police Department at (706) 754-5390 or (706) 778-3911.
