Lawrenceville teen airlifted after jumping from car on I-85 in Banks County on Tuesday

HOMER — The Banks County Sheriff’s Office has released details of a Tuesday-afternoon incident that injured a Gwinnett County teen on I-85.

“On Tuesday, Dec. 26, at approximately 4:35 p.m., Banks County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to Interstate 85 southbound, in the area of mile marker 153, in reference to a traumatic injury,” Sheriff’s Sgt. Casey Brouwer said Thursday.

“The initial caller stated that one of the passengers of the white BMW, a 13-year-old male, had fallen out of the vehicle while it was traveling at full speed,” Brouwer said.

According to Brouwer, further investigation revealed that the teen and his family were headed home from visiting other family members in North Carolina to Lawrenceville when the teen became involved in a verbal altercation with a family member in the car.

The teen, whose name is not being released, then removed his seatbelt, opened the car door, and jumped out of the car while it was traveling at highway speeds, resulting in him falling to the shoulder of the highway, according to Brouwer.

The teen suffered multiple lacerations and possible broken bones, but was conscious and speaking when he was taken to an Atlanta area hospital by a medical transport helicopter, Brouwer said.
