The Red Cross was assisting several Gainesville families following a Christmas morning apartment fire.
Gainesville Fire Division Chief Keith Smith said a pan of grease on a stove caused a kitchen fire in a unit at Vineyards of McEver.
He said no one was injured, and the fire was primarily suppressed by the sprinkler system in the apartment.
Smith added that the American Red Cross was called in to assist families as several units sustained significant water damage.
The fire started just before noon on Monday.
