As the Christmas holiday fast approaches, prices for a gallon of gas fell 3.5 cents in Georgia.
The average price for regular unleaded was $2.29, according to AAA, with GasBuddy.com countering their price tracking at an average of $2.25.
The decline marks five consecutive weeks of falling prices.
AAA reports the prices for the years-end and holiday season are on par, if not lower than, 2016. GasBuddy's data agreed, with analysts pointing out that average prices in the U.S. are at their lowest point in 110 days.
"As long as demand for gasoline continues to weaken, gasoline inventories will continue growing and it'll be the gift that keeps on giving. In addition, the gap between prices today and a year ago is also at its narrowest in months, highlighting that prices are moving in the right direction for many," said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. "As we look towards our annual Fuel Outlook being released just after the New Year, there are some bright spots along with some concerns that lay ahead for 2018."
Both agencies pointed out that these prices are the lowest since Hurricane Harvey's impact on Gulf Coast refineries.
GasBuddy.com's live price tracker reports the Gainesville area saw prices of $2.07 a gallon on average at the time of publication. That's down almost 16 cents from last yesterday and 17.5 cents from last week. However, AAA reports average prices in Hall County at $2.24 a gallon.
In the rest of the state, AAA reports the highest prices are in coastal Savannah at $2.36 and Brunswick at $2.32; the lowest prices in Catoosa-Dade-Walker at $2.19. GasBuddy reported Augusta with the lowest price in Augusta at $2.18 and the highest price in Atlanta at $2.33.
GasBuddy.com gathers data by user submitted data, while AAA gathers data by surveying credit card swipes and direct data.
