GDOT: Northeast Georgia roads slushy, but passable; caution urged in mountains

By B.J. Williams

As is the case with any winter weather event, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has its crews working 12-hour shifts, making sure state roads are as clear as possible. As of mid-morning Saturday, most state-maintained highways and interstates were free of snow and slush, according to Katie Strickland, GDOT District One Communications Coordinator.

District One encompasses 21 counties across Northeast Georgia, and Strickland said the most treacherous roads are in Lumpkin, White, Union and Rabun counties in the mountains.

"We are starting to see trees come down," Strickland said. "So, please, if you are traveling just be aware that the snow is still coming down and it's going to weigh on those trees."

A winter weather warning remains in place until noon for Rabun County, but snow should start to dissipate after that.

Elsewhere in District One, Strickland said there is some slush on the highways and some snow piled up on the shoulders of the roads, but most lanes should be passable.

"Area 1, which is Dawson, Forsyth, Gwinnett and Hall counties, there we have I-85, 985 and 400 - all of those routes look good. We have plowed those and pre-treated those," Strickland said.

Even with improving conditions on the major thoroughfares, Strickland still urged caution, asking people to stay home unless travel is absolutely necessary.
