Candidate drops out of Suwanee City Council race

The lone challenger to incumbent Suwanee City Councilwoman Beth Hilscher has withdrawn his candidacy, officials confirmed.

Joe Briggs, 59, had come under fire in the latter weeks of his campaign over a series of social media posts made more than a year ago that called Zionists "cockroaches" and compared Jews to Nazis.

He withdrew his name Monday, Suwanee spokeswoman Abby Wilkerson confirmed, the day before the municipal elections.

Votes cast for Briggs in the early voting period will not be counted.

Suwanee has two other contested city council races on Tuesday's ballot; Incumbents Linnea Miller and Dan Foster are running against Paquita V. Wright and John Kantor, respectively.

This is the second local race that saw the lone challenger to an incumbent leave the race.

In Buford, Gary A. Ingram, who challenged Chris Burge for a city commission post, was disqualified from the race when officials learned he no longer lived in the district.
