GDOT to work Monday, Tuesday at I-85/Ga. 53 area

By B.J. Williams
Coming up on Monday and Tuesday, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has planned some repair work in the busy area of Interstate 85 and State Route 53 in Jackson County.

On Monday, Nov. 6, crews will repair the asphalt driving surface at the on-ramp from SR 53 to I-85 northbound, according to GDOT spokeswoman Katie Strickland.

"[The ramp] has some areas that need to be repaired," Strickland said. "The asphalt there is what we call OGFC, which is open graded friction coarse, so it's a little bit coarser of an asphalt so it can really have traction for people entering the interstate."

Crews will return to the area on Tuesday, Nov. 7, Strickland said. She said workers will be on the bridge itself that day.

"The center lane has some areas that have been identified that need to be removed or milled up and then new asphalt [installed]," Strickland said.

She said the paving work will take place on the SR 53 approach to the I-85 traffic signal at the on and off ramps.

Strickland said the work will take place both days from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in order to avoid as much rush hour traffic as possible. The estimation is that the work will be complete in just two days.
