Jefferson pair arrested following mail theft investigation

Two people from Jefferson were arrested Thursday for 13 counts of theft by taking.

Casey Eugene Kimsey, 29, and Melisa Renia Croya, 35, face the charges after Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum said their department received information that named Kimsey as a suspect in a mail theft operation.

"Somebody had been taking mail out of mailboxes and we might find it strewn on another road, belonging to someone, so we had already been investigating the theft of mail," said Mangum. "Some information came in that led investigators to the residence of Kimsey, and a search warrant was conducted on the house and mail was found belonging to several victims."

After further investigation, Mangum said Kimsey and Croya were arrested.

Mangum said Kimsey also faces a theft by receiving stolen property and burglary in the second degree charges that were already pending when the search warrant executed during the mail theft investigation.

And, Croya had a hold out of Banks and Madison counties, as well as out of Royston, but Mangum was not sure what the holds were for exactly.

Mangum said they believe Croya was with him at the time the mail was taken and that Kimsey and Croya are friends.

The investigation is ongoing and said there were other details  in the investigation that they were not releasing at this time.
