GSP invites community to Oct. 23 event at Gainesville post

By B.J. Williams
The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) is opening up its headquarters building on Cleveland Highway in Gainesville on Monday, Oct. 23 for a special community event.

GSP Cpl. Spencer Munger said the idea is to build relationships between law enforcement and the public, and while the event isn't a festival, the atmosphere will be similar.

"We'll have an open house at the patrol post where people will be welcome to walk through," said Munger. "We'll have candy and Halloween prizes to give out to the kids."

Other law enforcement agencies have been invited to participate, and Munger said he's hoping to see personnel from the Hall County Sheriff's Office and the local fire departments and EMS on Monday.

"The Hall County Solicitor's Office, who prosecute the actual cases that we make, will have a victim advocate here," Munger said.

Munger said while the kids are enjoying their time in the bouncy houses on the property, parents and other adults will be able to talk about gun safety with a local expert. Plus, gun locks will be distributed at no charge as long as supplies last.

In addition, recruiters will be part of the event, talking to those who might be considering a career with the Georgia State Patrol.

"It's a dangerous job, so I encourage those who want to enter into this field to educate themselves and be prepared," Munger said. "It's a very challenging job, but it's also very rewarding."

While other GSP posts in Georgia will hold similar events, the Oct. 23 event in Gainesville is the only one scheduled in North Georgia.

The event is scheduled for 3 to 7 p.m. at the GSP Office at 2000 Cleveland Highway in Gainesville.
