UPDATE: Woman 'shot multiple times' after allegedly firing on officer near Buford, injuries called life threatening

A woman allegedly fired a gun at a Gwinnett County Police officer while the department's SWAT Team was serving drug-related warrants on Buford Dam Road Thursday morning, and authorities said she was shot as a result.

Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Michelle Pihera said the incident began to unfold around 6:30 a.m.

"As the officers were making entry into multiple areas of the home simultaneously, that's when a female occupant that was inside the house began firing at at least one of our officers," Pihera said.

She said the officer returned fire and hit the woman "multiple times." Pihera said one of the bullets hit the woman in the torso.

"The Gwinnett County SWAT team medics took that female out to a waiting ambulance and she was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville with very serious, life-threatening injuries," Pihera said.

The officer was not hit by gunfire, but Pihera said the officer sustained a minor arm injury, possibly caused by flying shrapnel or glass.

Eight people were inside of the home near Shadburn Ferry Road when the incident occurred.  Police said the remaining seven were taken to Gwinnett Police Headquarters for questioning.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the woman or the officer.

Pihera said this is the first officer-involved shooting for the Gwinnett County Police Department in 2017. The officer involved in the incident has been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation is underway.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the probe.
