Gwinnett County, Buford to team up on Ga. 20 widening project

Leaders in Gwinnett County and Buford are teaming up to widen Ga. 20, otherwise known as Buford Drive, between South Lee Street and Ga. 13/Buford Highway.

Gwinnett County commissioners approved an intergovernmental agreement for the work at their meeting Tuesday night.

Plans call for widening the stretch of road from four to six lanes, according to county documents. The highway is six lanes from South Lee Street east to the I-85 interchange.

The $5,541,447.63 contract was awarded to C.W. Matthews Contracting Co. and includes the construction of a sidewalk on Old Suwanee Road near Buford Highway.

55-percent of the contract funding comes from "various SPLOST programs," 19-percent comes from Buford and 26-percent comes from the Georgia Department of Transportation.

It was not immediately clear when construction might begin on the project.
