Wildfire closes section of I-85 near Buford

By AccessWDUN staff

A section of I-85 near Buford was closed for a time Saturday afternoon because of a "sizeable" grass and woods fire.

Gwinnett County Fire Department spokesman Tommy Rutledge said in an email firefighters got the call about 4:40 to an area along the Interstate, southbound, north of Spout Springs Road.

"The fire was brought under control by 5:25 p.m.," Rutledge added.  "There were no vehicles or structures involved."

Though he did not specify the size of the area that burned, he did describe it as "sizeable."

"The fire burned close to an adjacent subdivision, but was quickly contained by firefighters and did not actually enter the subdivision.  The fire was spotty and scorched the brush up to the DOT (right-of-way) fence..."

I-85 southbound was temporarily closed as fire crews battled the flames and "maneuvered fire trucks over a 1/3 of a mile area," Rutledge said.  "Police assisted with traffic control and were able to open the left lane to keep traffic moving at a slower pace."

Rutledge said Georgia Forestry was contacted "to cut a fire break around the area to keep the fire contained due to steady winds.  There were no injuries reported and no word yet on the exact cause of the fire."
