Storm-related Clarkesville fire sends woman to hospital in critical condition

Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens' office has released details of a Habersham County house fire that resulted in critical injuries to the resident.

That fire, at 1114 Sam Bell Road outside Clarkesville around 4 a.m. Sunday, was accidental and was caused by lightning, said Hudgens' spokesman Glenn Allen Sunday afternoon.

Smoke from that fire overcame a 93-year-old female resident of the home, and she was rushed by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where she remained in critical condition about 1 p.m., Allen said.

Allen said the storm-related fire started when "lightning hit a tree outside the residence then traveled via underground utilities into the HVAC system" of the home, igniting the fire.
