Fire destroys White County home, claims family's pet

By Dean Dyer WRWH Radio

CLEVELAND — A doublewide mobile home in White County was destroyed by fire Thursday afternoon.

County fire units were dispatched to 366 Oglethorpe Lane, off Eli Knob west of Cleveland, at 3:23 p.m.

The fire was discovered by a neighbor who called 9-1-1, but the home was well involved and was completely destroyed by the time fire units arrived.

There was no one at the residence at the time of the fire, and fire officials said a family pet died in the fire.

The home was located on a single-lane road, challenging fire units who had to send in a single tanker truck at a time to supply water to extinguish the blaze.

The blaze also started a woods fire around the home and a Georgia Forestry Commission unit was dispatched to plow a fire break around the home.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office.
