Inauguration: A prayer vigil, marches, rallies planned in Gainesville, Athens, Atlanta

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

A prayer vigil, rallies and marches are planned in Gainesville, Athens and Atlanta Friday and Saturday in connection with President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration.

In Gainesville, former local Southern Christian Leadership Conference president Jeffery Williams is calling for a prayer vigil Friday afternoon in downtown Gainesville following Trump's swearing-in.

“This Friday I’m asking that all churches and all organizations come together at 5 o’clock at the federal courthouse for a prayer vigil," Williams said at an MLK Day breakfast Monday at which plans to revive the local SCLC chapter were discussed. "Let’s pray for the city of Gainesville and the state of Georgia and the country of America.”

Some people in Athens will come together to recognize a Day of Resistance in response to the inauguration.

"We will join for a massive rally and march in a public demonstration of our commitment to resist the coming horrors and our belief in the possibility of a better future," according to a press release from Athens For Everyone announcing plans for the event which will be held at Athens City Hall at 5:30 Friday.

Meanwhile, in Atlanta, Black Lives Matter of Greater Atlanta plans a rally and march, starting at 1:00 Saturday at the Center for Civil and Human Rights and ending at the State Capitol.  In addition, WeThePeopleATL will hold an Anti-Inauguration Rally "simultaneous and in direct opposition to the inauguration of Donald Trump as President of the United States," according to a press release from the group.  It will begin at 10:30 at Centennial Park.

Inauguration Day protests are nothing new in the nation's history.  An Internet search for "Inauguration Day Protests History" will turn up numerous references to past such events.
