Wrestling: State Duals: Jefferson, Buford advance to semifinals

MACON — Jefferson and Buford both moved into the semifinal round of their respective classifications after the first two rounds of the State Duals at the Macon Centreplex on Thursday.

Jefferson opened the Class AAAA tournament with a dominating 79-0 win over Northside-Columbus in the first round and then whipped Marist 57-18 in the quarterfinals.

The No. 2 seed Dragons will take on Woodward Academy on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the semifinals. Gilmer, the four-time defending Class AAAA champion, and Luella advanced to the other semifinal.

In Class AAAAA, No. 2 seed Buford demolished Arabia Mountain 84-0 with pins in all 14 matches in the first round. The Wolves then moved into the semifinals with a 41-23 victory over Veterans in the quarterfinals.

Woodland-Cartersville and Ola advanced in the other semifinal.

Meanwhile, in Class AAAAAA, Gainesville, the No. 2 seed from Region 8-AAAAAA, fell to Region 1-AAAAAA champion Valdosta 59-15 and will take on Richmond Hill, a 31-30 loser to Alexander, at 10 a.m. on Friday in the consolation bracket.

Region 8-AAAAAA champion Lanier also fell, losing 48-33 to Lee County in the first round. The Longhorns will take on Effingham County, which lost 51-25 to South Paulding, at 10 a.m. in the consolation round.

Lumpkin County and Jackson County in Class AAA will open their tournaments on Friday at 5:30 p.m. The Indians will take on Cook County and the Panthers will take on Pierce County.

Commerce, the three-time defending Class A champion, will open the Class A tournament.
