Buford driver was three times legal limit after March wreck that killed two women in Baldwin

Six months after a wreck that killed two women on Ga. 365 in Baldwin the woman charged in that crash remains jailed.

Kathleen Susan Hamilton Steffens, 35, of Buford was arrested March 15 after the wreck on Ga. 365 southbound just before Ga. 384 (Duncan Bridge Road).

Hamilton Steffens is charged with two counts of first-degree homicide by vehicle, serious injury by vehicle, DUI alcohol less safe, and failure to maintain lane. Bond is set at $68,700.

Hamilton Steffens had a blood alcohol content of 0.244 when tested several hours after the wreck, according to Georgia State Patrol reports.

Steffens' vehicle was traveling south on Ga. 365, traveled off the west shoulder of the highway and struck the rear of a 2013 Honda CRV that was parked off the west shoulder, according to GSP.

The resulting collision killed Teddye Sue Martin, 63, of Tyrone, the driver who was standing in front of the parked vehicle after stopping when she became ill; and Elise Nicole Martin, 26, of Atlanta, the left rear passenger in the parked vehicle. Elise Nicole Martin was restrained at the time of impact.

The right front passenger in the parked vehicle, Molly Alexandria Martin, 25, of Tyrone was seriously injured and was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center. She was restrained at the time of the crash.

Hamilton Steffens remained jailed in the Habersham County Detention Center on Tuesday, after 197 days.
