U.S Forest Service wants to hear from public on Foothills Landscape project

The U.S. Forest Service is seeking input from the public as they look to put together landscape management policies for a 143,419-acre swath of the Chattahoochee National Forest in north Georgia.

Included in The Foothills Landscape project are sections of the Cohutta WMA in Fannin, Gilmer and Murray Counties, as well as Forest Services lands in Dawson, Habersham, Lumpkin, Rabun and White Counties.

According to their website the purpose of this project is to create, restore and maintain ecosystems that are more resilient to natural disturbances.

The Forest Service says it is seeking to enhance and provide quality habitat for rare and declining species, as well as desired game and non-game species; to reduce hazardous fuel loading across the landscape, to diminish damaging wildfires; to improve soil and water quality; to provide sustainable recreation and access opportunities; and to awaken and strengthen a connection to these lands for all people.

A series of five public “Community Conversations” has been scheduled as follows:

Additionally, the Forest Service says the public can make online suggestions for the Foothills Landscape project and offer other feedback until December 1, 2016, by following the links on their website.
