Oakwood man now faces rape, kidnapping and assault charges in weekend attack

An Oakwood man who led police on a two-hour evening manhunt Sunday faces new charges related to an attack on a woman.

Oakwood Police Chief Randall Moon said Steven Areizaga, 30, allegedly held the victim against her will inside the Audubon Crest apartments on Lanier Mill Circle for at least 12 hours.

When officers responded, he allegedly fought with them and then ran.  Moon said several agencies were involved in the foot chase.

"There were K-9s from the (Hall County) sheriff's office, (we) called in a helicopter from the Georgia State Patrol, and then of course the state patrol, Hall County Sheriff's Office, DNR and ourselves eventually caught the suspect about a mile from the incident location," Moon said Monday.

At one point during the initial crime, Moon said Areizaga sexually and physically assaulted the victim.

The new charges are rape, assault and kidnapping.

"At one point she was dragged back inside the apartment thus the charge of kidnapping," Moon wrote in an email Tuesday morning.

Areizaga remained in the Hall County Jail.
