Fiery Dawson Co. accident sends one to hospital

By Bryan Pirkle Reporter

One person was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon in a two-vehicle accident near Dawsonville that saw one vehicle overturn and briefly catch fire.

The accident happened just after 4 p.m. when a Ford Explorer being driven by Dawsonville native Savannah Newton, 21, attempted to make a left turn onto Dawson Forest Road from Ga. 53.

State Patrol Sgt. Curtis Bradshaw said the Ford failed to yield to an oncoming Jeep Wrangler that was traveling south on Dawson Forest Road, causing the front of the Jeep to collide with the right side of the Ford.

Bradshaw said the force of the collision caused the Ford to overturn. It eventually came to a rest on its passenger side along the west shoulder of Ga. 53.

The vehicle apparently caught fire after rolling, but Bradshaw said the fire was quickly extinguished.

Newton suffered "significant but not life-threatening" injuries in the crash and was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center. She has since been cited for failure to yield.

The driver of the Jeep, Gainesville resident Jenny Joyce, 44, "complained of minor injuries from the air bag deployment but refused transport to the hospital."

Bradshaw said the roadway was blocked for a short amount of time to facilitate the investigation and cleanup efforts, although he added that authorities were able to reroute traffic around the crash.
