UNG's Coulombe advances toward NCAA's Woman of the Year honor

By UNG Athletics Communications

INDIANAPOLIS — Just one month after 517 female student-athletes were recognized as nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year, University of North Georgia's Shannon Coulombe has been named one of the 142 women remaining for the 2016 honor. Along with Clayton State's Maia Kuhnen, the duo is among the 37 selected from the Division II ranks for the award.

Coulombe graduated from UNG after three seasons as a member of the nationally ranked women's soccer program. The Duluth native was a three-time member of the PBC Presidential Honor Roll and served as vice-president of the UNG Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

The UNG SAAC set a NCAA record this past year with $34,000 raised for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, winning the LeeAnn Noble PBC Make-A-Wish Most Funds Raised award for the fifth consecutive year.

This fall, Coulombe will remain in the Nighthawk family as a graduate assistant for the women's golf program.

In early September, the Woman of the Year selection committee will name the Top 30 honorees, representing the top 10 women in each division. The selection committee will then choose and announce the nine finalists, with three from each division, at the end of September. Then, from the pool of nine finalists, the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will determine the 2016 Woman of the Year.

The Top 30 honorees will be celebrated and the 2016 NCAA Woman of the Year will be named at the annual banquet Oct. 16 in Indianapolis.

The NCAA Woman of the Year program has recognized graduating female student-athletes for excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership since its inception in 1991.
