Banks County patrol car strikes man sleeping in the road

A Texas man was struck by a Banks County Sheriff's Office patrol car as he slept in a Banks Crossing road overnight Tuesday.

Joshua Plant, 39, of San Angelo, Texas, was struck by a 2014 Ford Taurus driven by Deputy Christopher Boyer, said Cpl. J.S. Munger of Georgia State Patrol Post 6 in Gainesville.

Boyer "was making a U-turn at the end of an unfished dead-end road west of Ga. 15, in a dirt area where U-turns are very common," Munger said.

"Plant was sleeping in the U-turn area in dark clothing," Munger said. "Vehicle 1 struck the sleeping pedestrian, causing unspecified non-life-threatening  injuries."

Plant was taken by ambulance to Athens Regional Medical Center.

The incident occurred on the newly-constructed Industrial Boulevard in Banks Crossing.

"Speed does not appear to be a factor as the patrol vehicle was traveling at less than 10 mph when the incident occurred," said Banks County Chief Deputy Shawn Wilson.
