Eighty tons of sand is being dumped into part of downtown Gainesville today for Beach Bash 2016.

The four-hour event kicks off at 6:00 Friday on the square.

Main Street Gainesville will be turning the "Fourth Side of the Square" into a beach, according to a posting on the city's Website.  There is no charge and the beach party will include hula hoop and limbo contests, a Conga line, beach buckets and toys, and more.

The sand arrives today will be dumped onto the surface parking lot (known to some as The Belk Lot) across from Hunt Tower, according to city hall spokeswoman Catiel Felts.

Felts said street closures do not begin until Friday at 5:00.  "We will close Spring and the portion of Bradford fronting the square," she said in an email.  "You will still be able to get through the square on Washington. All the parking spaces on Spring on the square will be closed tomorrow (Friday).  We encourage everyone to use the Brenau Center deck."

Felts added that "Any Volks VW club will bring their VW bugs since bugs seem to go with the beach. All bugs are welcome!"
