A pedestrian was pronounced dead in Jackson County Tuesday afternoon, possibly hit by a vehicle on Interstate 85 at the Dry Pond Road exit, emergency officials said.

"Units from Plainview Fire/Rescue and Jackson County EMS responded to I-85 at the Highway 82 exit, Exit 140, on report of a person hit by a vehicle," Jackson County Emergency Services Director Steve Nichols said in a media release.

Nichols said those responders received the initial call around 2:20 p.m., indicating a person had been hit by a vehicle.

"Upon arrival they found a patient who was pronounced dead on the scene possibly struck by a vehicle, tractor trailer," Nichols stated.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office and Georgia State Patrol remained on the scene for several hours as they conducted their initial investigation, temporarily shutting down one lane of the highway in order to facilitate their efforts. The highway was fully reopened shortly before 7 p.m.

Exit 140 is Dry Pond Road to the East and Holly Springs Road to the west (Ga. 82).
