Gainesville Memorial Day events include annual parade, 24-hour vigil

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

Memorial Day events in Gainesville Monday include the annual parade down Green Street and the Hall County Sheriff's Office Honor Guard's 24-hour vigil at Memorial Park Cemetery.

The parade begins in front of First Baptist Church at 10:00 and ends at Spring Street in the downtown area.  Gainesville Police say all streets leading to Green Street will be closed to motorists starting around 8:00 a.m.

The event at Memorial Park is a salute to fallen service members and is patterned after the around-the-clock vigil at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.

Monday night at 7:30 at First Baptist on Green Street, the Northwinds Symphonic Band will present its annual Memorial Day Concert.

Already signs of the coming observance have popped up around town - the bank of white croses on Dawsonville Highway at the Masonic Lodge across from Lakeshore Mall and the small American flags that dot the gravesites of veterans at Alta Vista Cemetery.
