Lanier Olympic Center set for another big weekend, as collegiate rowers descend on Gainesville

By AccessWDUN Staff

GAINESVILLE — For the second weekend in a row, the Lake Lanier Olympic Center will buzz with activity, as athletes pack into the venue in pursuit of glory.

Last week, the Clarks Bridge site hosted the Pan-American Sprint Canoe-Kayak games as the best paddlers in the western hemisphere vied for a shot at an Olympic invitation.

This week sees paddles traded for oars, as some of the best collegiate rowers in the nation converge on Gainesville for the 2016 American Collegiate Rowing Association Regatta -- the national championship meet of the sport. This will be the sixth year the event has visited Lake Lanier.

The event, which will take place Saturday and Sunday, features 67 teams -- almost 40 more entries than last year's Regatta -- and about 1,700 rowers competing in 24 different races.

Athletes representing universities and club squads from as far away as California, Minnesota and Vermont will take part in the competition.
