PHOTOS: School crosswalk named in honor of long-time crossing guard

By AccessWDUN Staff
For decades, Jacob Wilmont has been a fixture outside of Enota Multiple Intelligences Academy, making sure traffic flows smoothly and children walk safely to and from school to vehicle.

On Wednesday morning, the crosswalk in front of the school was named to honor Wilmont, who will retire after 40 years on the job.

City leaders along with students and staff from Enota honored Wilmont, unveiling the new sign at his crosswalk.

Wilmont retired from the City of Gainesville after 30 years with Gainesville Parks and Recreation but continued to work with Gainesville City Schools and has worked for over 40 years as a crossing guard and safety guard for the school system.  Not only did Wilmont served as a crossing guard at Enota, but also he worked in the same capacity at Gainesville Middle School.

Additionally, he has managed the safety teams at Bobby Gruhn Field for football games and other athletic events.

A second event to honor Wilmont is a community celebration scheduled for Saturday, May 7, at 4 p.m. at St. John Baptist Church.
