Lady Lions softball remains atop USA South after sweep of Methodist

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — In the final road contests of the regular season, the Piedmont softball team picked up another pair of victories over Methodist University 4-1 and 6-0. Piedmont now sits at 22-9 this season with an impressive 12-2 mark in league play as the Lady Lions remain in first overall in the conference.

Piedmont took the lead in the fifth inning of game one after Audrey Esakoff scored on an error that allowed Laura Carter to reach first. In the home half of the frame, the Monarchs tied the game at one after a single and an error as well.

The Lady Lions sealed the victory in the top of the seventh with three runs as Carter singled to left scoring Allyson Gentry followed by Carter and Haley McCurry scoring after Josie Coker reached on an error.

Coker was 2-for-4 in the contest as the only Lady Lion to record multiple hits in the game with two of five hits for Piedmont. Melissa Eckman earned the win in the circle moving to 8-4 giving up one run on three hits with three walks and six strikeouts. 

Game two saw the Lady Lion offense explode with six runs on 10 hits while Avery Migues allowed just two hits in the shutout in the circle for Piedmont. The Lady Lions scored three in the top of the third with Hannah Hoban, Abby Smith and Anna Lee Stone all recording RBI hits in the inning.

The final runs came with two in the fifth and another in the sixth as Piedmont won 6-0 to complete the sweep. Of Piedmont's 10 hits, Smith accounted for four of them getting a hit in each at bat of the game. Allison Vaughn was the other Lady Lion to record a pair of hits in the contest going 2-for-4 with two RBI. 

Piedmont will host Agnes Scott on April 2 at home with eight home contests remaining in the regular season.
