Utility companies warn of springtime scammers

Scammers are at it once again this spring, this time posing as utility companies, demanding payment from customers over the phone.

Jackson EMC and Georgia Power have both received reports of the scam, according to press releases from the companies.

“Scammers were fairly quiet over the winter, but it seems that spring has brought them out of hibernation. We’re receiving reports from customers that they’re being contacted by phone and email by imposters claiming to be their utility company, warning them that their bill is overdue,” says Jackson EMC Director of Customer Service Brent Cochran.

The scammers will call residents and businesses, claiming to be with the power company, alleging that the customer owes on their power bill.

They demand payment with a pre-paid debit card, threatening to shut off the customer's power if no payment is given.

Both utility companies said they will never ask for a customer's credit card information or for a pre-paid debit card over the phone.

Georgia Power customers will receive a pre-recorded phone message or a letter, requesting they contact Georgia Power, should there be a balance on the account.

Jackson EMC customers will receive a letter stating when payment must be made.

Any suspicious calls should be reported to law enforcement, and both utility companies said if you have any concerns, to contact their respective customer service lines.

“Please don’t give these thieves your hard-earned money. If you have any doubt whatsoever about who is contacting you, stop, pick up the phone book and call your utility’s office first,” said Cochran
