US Senate, Hall County Commission races heat up mid qualifying week

The week of qualifying has reached the half way point - the last day is Friday - and candidates filing qualifying paperwork is slowing.

The race for U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson's seat heats up. The incumbent will face off with Democrats John F. Coyne III and Cheryl Copeland, both of whom qualified Tuesday, Democrat James Know and Republican Derrick Grayson, both of whom qualified Monday.

Paul Broun, former 10th District Congressman, announced Wednesday on WDUN's Morning Talk that he will challenge 9th District Congressman Doug Collins for the seat, along with Democrat Roger Fitzpatrick. However, Broun had not qualified as of Wednesday afternoon.

The Georgia Secretary of State's website shows that Ben Anderson, a Democrat from Grantville, has qualified for the House District 29; however, a spokeswoman for the office says his paperwork was misfiled, and Anderson is actually running for Senate District 29. That means Republican Matt Dubnik is unopposed as of Wednesday. The seat is currently held by Carl Rogers, who is retiring. The spokeswoman said the error should be corrected by midday Thursday.

State Representative Emory Dunahoo of Gainesville has picked up opposition for his District 30 seat in the State House. Democrat Michelle Jones of Flowery Branch announced her candidacy in a press release Monday and then filed qualifying paperwork with the Secretary of State's office Tuesday.

In Hall County, the County Commission District 4 race expands with Republican Troy Phillips qualifying Wednesday. Phillips faces incumbent Jeff Stowe in the primary. Democrat Angela Thomas Middleton is unopposed in the primary.

Lastly, Michael Haynes qualified for Hall County soil and water conservation and Chris Patton qualified for surveyor Wednesday.
