Canon woman charged in wreck that seriously hurt child

A Canon woman remains in the Elbert County Detention Center facing charges from a February wreck that injured two of the four young children in her vehicle — one seriously.

Stephine Nicole Allen, 22, was driving a 2011 Jeep Liberty Sport on Mineral Springs Road when it left the roadway, struck a culvert with its front end, vaulted airborne, and the rear of the vehicle struck the ground, according to Georgia State Patrol Post 52 in Hartwell. The wreck happened at 1:04 p.m. Feb. 15.

The wreck injured a 6-year-old girl, who was taken by Elbert County Emergency Medical Services to Athens Regional Medical Center suffering abdomen and pelvis injuries; and a 4-year-old boy, who was taken by ambulance to Elbert Memorial Hospital suffering a head injury, according to GSP. A 3-year-old girl and a 1-year-old girl in the vehicle were not hurt in the crash.

Allen also was hurt in the wreck, and was taken by ambulance to Athens Regional Medical Center.

Allen was arrested Friday, March 4, and charged with serious injury by vehicle, failure to maintain lane, failure to have license on person, two counts of child or youth restraint not used properly, and driving while license withdrawn, suspended or revoked, jail records show.

Additionally, Allen is being held on a December 2015 warrant from Elberton Police Department.
