TIGER — For just the third time in school history, and the first since 2010, the Riverside Military basketball team advanced to the region finals, this time by virtue of a 47-36 victory over Greene County in the region 8-AA semifinals at the Rabun County gym.

The Eagles (14-8) won their only region title in 2009 beating Rabun County. They lost to Jefferson in the 2010 title game.

Riverside will take on Rabun County 8:30 p.m. Saturday in the championship game.

The Eagles wasted little time using a 14-1 run to open the game and then cruise to the win. Javon Thompson, who scored 16 points, was the catalyst for the early run. Riverside took a 25-13 into halftime.

Thompson was more than efficient hitting all five of his field goal attempts and going 6-for-7 from the free throw line for the game. Davis Short added 14 points and Juwan Thompson finished with 10 points for Riverside.

In other Region 8-AA semifinal action, the Rabun County boys defeated Union County 59-41, while the Rabun County girls defeated Washington-Wilkes 78-34. That win set up a title showdown with Union County, which knocked off Social Circle 50-43.
