No. 1 Nighthawks shut out No. 18 UAH in Gulf Coast opener, 4-0

By UNG Athletics Communications

GULF SHORES, Ala. — Courtney Poole picked up right where she left off in 2015, claiming a five-hit shutout over No. 18 Alabama-Huntsville Friday afternoon in the opening game of the Gulf Coast Invitational. UNG moves to 1-4 on the season with the victory.

The Nighthawks got on the board in the bottom of the second when Katie Block came up with a two-out RBI single through the right side to score Alexis Collis from second base to give UNG a 1-0 lead.

Meredith Heyer gave North Georgia some insurance in the sixth coming up with a three-run bomb over the fence in left center to put UNG up 4-0.

Poole struck out eight while only allowing two walks and five hits in her 2016 debut.

Heyer's long ball was just the fourth of her career after hitting two home runs in her sophomore campaign and one last season.

The shutout was the first of the season for UNG after a rough weekend in the circle last week at the PBC/GSC Southern Softball Showdown in Columbus.

North Georgia will return to the diamond Saturday to play two, taking on West Alabama at 10 a.m. and Miles College at 2:30 p.m. Live stats for the game will be provided on UNGAthletics.com.
