Hall County Planning Commission approves relocation of Gainesville church

After over 50 years in its current location, Cross Plains Baptist Church in Gainesville is looking to relocate.

It will not be a major relocation, however, as the church just plans to move a few hundred feet down Cross Plains Road to the intersection of Dixieland Farm Road.

The reason for the move is simply the need for a new facility.

“Our church is falling apart,” said Kevin Brown, the applicant representing Cross Plains Baptist Church, to the Hall County Planning Commission. “It’s not dangerous or anything, but it’s getting older.”

This isn’t the first time Cross Plains Church has relocated and rebuilt since it was founded in 1879. On Monday, the planning commission approved the request to rezone the property, the first step in the building process.

The land was donated to Cross Plains Church by Hanson Aggregates, owner of the surrounding Gainesville Stone Company quarry. The land is undeveloped and currently stands covered with trees.

The rezoning request will now go to the Hall County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 12 for final action.
