UPDATE: Investigators classify device found in Gainesville home as an 'improvised explosive'

By B.J. Williams
Authorities still don't have much to say about a device found in a Gainesville house that prompted a neighborhood evacuation Monday night, but now they are calling the device an "improvised explosive."

In an email response to a request for updated information in the case, Gainesville Police Sgt. Kevin Holbrook said investigators believe the device was linked to the Sherwood Drive house where it was discovered. However, the names of those who might be involved have not been made public.

"Further information regarding the individual(s) are being withheld pending the active investigation," Holbrook wrote.

The device was discovered around 5:30 p.m. Monday. Gainesville police responded to the scene initially and then called the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Members of the GBI bomb squad detonated the device and took the components with them for analysis.

Residents in the neighborhood were evacuated from their homes for several hours while the GBI worked with the device.

"The public should know that we have taken every step possible to ensure their safety. As always public safety is our top priority," Holbrook said in the email.
