Oakwood City Council: New amendment closes loophole on bars staying open past serving hours

The Oakwood City Council has added an amendment to its city code pertaining to the sale of alcoholic beverages for consumption which basically states that once the hour where an establishment is permitted to sell alcohol has passed, the establishment must close its doors for the night.

“We had one business that had a practice of basically selling alcohol and then leaving it out and staying open for two or three hours after the time that serving had expired,” Oakwood City Manager Stan Brown said. “Then we had a number of police calls to that location for some fights.”

Brown chose not to disclose the name of that business since it has ceased operations after its liquor license was revoked, but he felt that this amendment was important to prevent future instances in which establishments attempted to sell multiple drinks right before closing time in an effort to extend operating hours.

Under the current Oakwood City Code, alcohol sales are to cease at 1 a.m. Monday through Friday, midnight on Saturday and 11:30 p.m. on Sunday. This new amendment states that once alcohol sales cease, that establishment is to cease operations at that time.

“If they’re going to do last call,” Brown said. “They need to do it a little earlier so that last call can be consumed before it’s time to shut the doors.”
