UPDATE: Rock Mountain wildfire at 93 percent containment

By AccessWDUN Staff

Fire crews from around the country continue to make progress on the Rock Mountain wildfire in Rabun County, which, as of Sunday morning, is 93 percent contained.

Information Officer for the Rock Mountain fire Debbie Carlisi said that as of Saturday firefighters were working on supression repair to the affected area, which takes up nearly 25,000 acres. Carlisi said the recent heavy rainfall totals have helped crews with fire in brush and leaves, but, she said, the heavier fire sources were unaffected by this week's storms.

"We still had what we called large fuel that was burning," Carlisi said. "Which is logs and stumps and snags, you know, the bigger things out in the woods. But, with the moisture in the air and the humidity, that helped a lot with the fire efforts."

More rain moved into the area Saturday afternoon and is expected to continue through Sunday.

Fire officials are still working towards a goal of extinguishing the fire completely by December 15.
