Evelyn Hancock, devoted Sunday School teacher, dies

A woman who was a devoted Sunday School teacher to countless youngsters in the Gainesville area for more than 70 years has died.

The funeral for Evelyn Smith Hancock, 92, who died Wednesday, will be held Sunday at St. Paul United Methodist Church on Washington Street.

She was a member of civic and community organizations, including the Junior Service League and the volunteer programs at Northeast Georgia Hospital System. 

According to her obituary, Hancock’s life passion was teaching Sunday School at St. Paul.  She was recognized by the congregation in 2013 for her 73 years of classroom teaching of preschoolers, and she was also recognized for her 70 years of being part of the St. Paul choir.
