Dawson County authorities investigate cause of fatal fire

By B.J. Williams
A 64-year-old woman was killed in a Dawson County fire earlier this week.

Dawson County Fire Chief Lanier Swafford said the victim was home alone Monday afternoon when she was killed. Her husband was at work at the time, according to Swafford.

He said they still aren't sure how the fire started.

"Fire investigators were on the scene yesterday still working, but at this time it has been ruled as undetermined," Swafford said.

The 1,500 square foot home was located on Bagwell Road in the south end of the county. Swafford said the house was about 60-percent involved in fire when crews arrived around lunchtime on Monday.

The Dawson County Sheriff's Office and the Dawson County Coroner's Office also were part of the investigation.

Authorities have identified the victim as Guinett Holtzclaw. Her body was transported to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Swafford said he believed the death to be the only fire fatality in Dawson County this year.
