Local Democrats, churches team for 'Souls to the Polls'

By Derreck Booth Anchor/reporter
The Hall County Democratic Party is sponsoring an event Saturday where several local churches will shuttle people to the polls for Saturday voting.
The effort, called Souls to the Polls, was organized by several churches.  Sheila Nicholas, Chair of the Hall County Democratic Party, said it's similar to an effort a couple of years ago in Cobb and Dekalb counties.
"The churches here that have vans, particularly within the African-American community, have had people sign up where they can either go and pick them up on Saturday, or the people will come to the church and the van will take them," Nicholas said.
Nicholas said the transportation effort will focus primarily on the East Hall Community Center.
"We fought hard, we being the Democratic Party, fought hard for the East Hall Community Center, because that's where a majority of the Latinos and African-Americans live," Nicholas said.
She said the churches coordinated the rides to the polls through sign-ups.
Saturday voting in Hall County runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
