Alabama supports Florida in upcoming water wars court battle against Georgia

By AccessWDUN staff
A trial is set to start Monday in Florida's lawsuit again Georgia over the amount of water Georgia uses in the Appalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin, and now, the state of Alabama has jumped on board - siding with Florida.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports Alabama has filed a friend-of-the-court brief, supporting Florida's call for a limit to how much water Georgia can use in the basin. According to the newspaper report, the brief also notes Alabama might file its own lawsuit against Georgia "should the need arise in the future."

The lawsuit contends that Georgia is using too much water from the basin - which includes Lake Lanier - for consumption. Florida claims it needs more water downstream to protect the fishing industry in the Appalachicola Bay.

The lawsuit will be heard in Portland, Maine.
