Stephens County wreck results in serious injuries

TOCCOA — The Georgia State Patrol has released details of a two-vehicle wreck that injured five people in Stephens County Tuesday afternoon.

Trooper 1st Class John Crawford of GSP Post 7 in Toccoa said the wreck happened on Ga. 17 (Toccoa Bypass) at Currahee Lane about 2:30 p.m.

The wreck involved a sliver 2004 Jeep Cherokee driven by Stacey Ragsdale Simpson, 37, of Toccoa, and a tan 2005 Ford Super Duty truck driven by Jeffrey Calvin Henslee, 44, of Rabun Gap, Crawford said.

Simpson's Jeep was traveling east on Currahee Lane and pulled from the median cut into the path of Henslee's truck, which was traveling in the right northbound lane of Ga. 17 (Toccoa Bypass), Crawford said. Impact occurred in the intersection.

The collision resulted in Simpson and her two passengers being trapped in the wreckage and having to be cut free.

Kristen Womack, 24, of Winder, was the front seat passenger in the Jeep and suffered serious injuries, Crawford said. She was flown from the scene by Gainesville-based AirLife Georgia 2 to Greenville Memorial Hospital in South Carolina. Crawford said she was conscious and talking.

Jamie Lee Pearsall, 22, of Auburn, was the right rear seat passenger and suffered possible serious injuries, Crawford said. She was taken by Habersham County ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Simpson was injured and was taken by Stephens County ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Crawford said.

Henslee refused ambulance transport at the scene, but was going by private vehicle for treatment, Crawford said. His passenger, Bobby Dale Littrell, 61, of Rabun Gap suffered visible injuries and also refused ambulance transport.

There was no airbag deployment in the truck, Crawford said.

"No drugs are alcohol are suspected," Crawford said.

Animal feed in barrels on the truck spilled during the wreck, but was removed during cleanup.

Any charges in the wreck are pending, Crawford said.

The wreck shut down both directions of Ga. 17 for about 30 minutes to allow the medical helicopter to land in the highway to pick up Womack. The road re-opened to traffic in both directions about 4 p.m.
