Lumpkin County burns brighter in offensive shootout over Fannin County

DAHLONEGA — Lumpkin County and Fannin County did their best to break the scoreboard on Friday night.

The two teams combined for 100 points and more than 1,300 yards of offense -- though the Indians' proved more ruthless, ringing up nine touchdowns in a 63-37 win in Dahlonega.

Lumpkin's Zach Matthews broke into the end zone four times to go along with 189 yards rushing on 22 carries. The total put him over 1,000 yards rushing for a third straight season. Indians quarterback Chandler Woodham added 157 yards rushing and two scores, while also completing 2 of 3 passes for 84 yards and a score (Julian Hazen caught the touchdown). Cole White also rushed for 133 yards and a touchdown, while Luke Smith added 125 yards rushing and a score.

All told, the Indians (4-4, 2-2 Region 7-AAA) rolled up 689 yards on just 49 plays, ensuing they stayed in the state playoff hunt.

Meanwhile, Fannin County put up 619 yards, including 346 yards passing and 103 yards rushing from Rebels quarterback Brad Davis.

The Rebels (2-6, 0-4) will look to bounce back against Union County next week in Blue Ridge.

Lumpkin County travels to Dawson County next week.
