Dawson County truck driver turns himself in after road rage incident last month

By B.J. Williams
The driver of a dump truck who got into an altercation with a UPS driver in Lumpkin County last month now has turned himself in to authorities.

Lt. Chris Pfrogner with the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office said the incident, which apparently started as a case of road rage, happened on September 28 at the Vulcan Materials quarry on Red Oak Flats Road.

He said the suspect, Robin Venable of Dawson County, apparently became angry with the UPS driver when he pulled out of a driveway on Red Oak Flats Roads and into Venable's path.

Pfrogner said Venable followed the UPS driver to his next stop at Vulcan Materials.

"Once they arrived at the rock quarry, the driver of the dump truck approached the UPS driver and they exchanged some words," Pfrogner said. "They got into a physical altercation - both of them - and then the dump truck driver walked back to his dump truck and gets a...metal pipe or metal object and came back and struck the UPS driver."

Pfrogner said Venable left the scene before deputies arrived. He said the UPS driver captured cell phone video of the incident, which helped investigators identify Venable.

Pfrogner said the UPS driver - whose name he did not release - suffered non-life threatening injuries and was treated at the hospital.

Investigators issued a warrant for Venable's arrest just after the incident, but he was not arrested until Thursday night. Pfrogner said Venable turned himself in at the Lumpkin County Detention Center to face charges of battery.
