After an eight-year absence, cycling stage racing will make its return to Georgia in March with the launch of the Mission Source Tour of the Southern Highlands. The event is the first stage race in the state since the Tour de Georgia ended its run in 2008.

Formerly known as the Gainesville Gran Prix, the 2016 Mission Source Tour of the Southern Highlands is transitioning to a pro/am stage race in this its fifth year of operation. The March 4-6 race is centered in the mountains of northeast Georgia. Race weekend will feature four events for the pros and three events for the amateur competitors.

It all begins on Friday, March 4, with street sprints in downtown Gainesville. These “drag races on bicycles” are part of the “S’More to Life” family fun night and include competition for the pros and the kids. A s’mores and hot chocolate bar will be at the center of the the kid-zone action off the drag strip and event sponsors will also be on hand with prize drawings and more.

On Saturday, March 5, the amateurs will join the action along with the pros for a time trial and a circuit race. Then, a road race with over 7,000 feet of climbing concludes the racing on Sunday, March 6.

Organizers say the event is already attracting attention from many top racing teams and is on the calendar of the U.S. Junior National Team as a team selection race.

“We are very excited to reintroduce stage racing to Georgia. In addition, as a USA Cycling Junior National Selection Race, the 2016 Mission Source Tour of the Southern Highlands is the only race east of the Rockies offering juniors an opportunity to demonstrate their ability while bringing national attention to our sponsors and this beautiful region," said Nathan O’Neill, Race Director in a news release.

The Mission Source Tour of the Southern Highlands is also seeking volunteers and host housing during the race week to accommodate the numerous riders, coaches and support staff that will flood the region.
