Snow ending, cold remains Saturday, warming on Sunday

Weather forecasters say some spots in the North Georgia mountains appear to have gotten nearly a foot of snow as the tail end of a major winter storm moved through Saturday morning.

"Early on yesterday (Friday) we had four to four and a half inches over Towns County, and then we had the secondary batch come through during the afternoon and evening," Jason Deese of the National Weather Service said.

He said snow even moved across parts of middle Georgia, but they didn't issue any advisories or warnings there.

While the snow largely exited during the morning, wind gusts up to 40 miles an hour were expected to remain Saturday.  A winter storm warning and wind advisory remained in effect for the region through 7:00 p.m. Saturday.

"It was just a really tough storm because it was such a dynamic storm, so we knew that going in. It was going to be a tough one to pinpoint exactly where the highest snowfall totals would be," Deese said.

He also said a number of factors were in play before and during the storm.

"There's a large temperature contrast. We had the wedge of cold air coming in from the Carolinas, and then we had the warm air surging up from the Gulf of Mexico, then we also had low pressure that was coming across the state," Deese added.

Rain, sleet and snowfall Friday and Saturday combined for a total of two inches of precipitation in Gainesville, according to data from Lee Gilmer Airport.

While the AccessWDUN forecast for Saturday called for a high of only 36 degrees, Sunday's forecast called for sunshine with a high of 47.
