Canon man charged with murder in death of mother, dog

CARNESVILLE - A Franklin County man remains jailed after allegedly killing his mother and her dog, then trying to kill himself.

John Robert Dye, 40, of Grady School Road in Canon is charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, and aggravated cruelty to animals in the death of his mother, 60-year-old Cynthia McCullough of the same address, according to Franklin County Chief Deputy/Investigator Jimmy LeCroy.

"Dye had been living there for about seven months," LeCroy said.

Deputies and medical personnel went to the home for a welfare check on Thursday, Aug. 27, after neighbors and her employer, TI Automotive, didn't hear from her from Sunday through Thursday,

LeCroy said deputies entered the home and found Dye unconscious in the hallway "due to what we believe were self-inflicted injuries."

A further search of the home revealed McCullough's body concealed on the bed, LeCroy said.

Dye was airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where he remained until Friday, Sept. 4, LeCroy said. He was arrested when he left the hospital.

Following an extradition hearing, Dye was picked up from the Greenville County Sheriff's Office and taken to the medical ward of the Franklin County Detention Center in Carnesville on Sept. 4.

During a bond hearing on Sept. 8, Dye was denied bond.

Asked if Franklin County deputies had been called to the home in the seven months Dye had been living there, LeCroy said there were "no prior calls whatsoever - no incident report filed, no 9-1-1 calls."

LeCroy said he anticipates the case will be presented to the Franklin County Grand Jury when it convenes next week.
