Shawn Chastain tops Super Late Model field at Dixie

By Jeff Smith

With only one weekend of points racing left on the schedule at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, Ga., Shawn Chastain took the win in the Super Late Model feature Saturday night, gaining another eight points on second place in points.

Chastain took control at the outset of the feature and was never contested for the lead. Meanwhile, behind him, positions were being traded throughout the race that would see longtime racer Wayne Echols in his best showing of the year, finishing in second to help shuffle the points around. T.J. Reaid, starting on the pole, held on for third place, allowing him to move into second place in the points battle. David Payne finished in fourth, with David Payne in fifth.

After tallying up the final points made on the evening of racing, Chastain goes into the Labor Day weekend with a 42 point lead. However, second through fourth place are up for grabs, as only 14 points separate Reaid (186), Thurman (184), and defending champion Jason Croft (172) with the final two points races slated for Sept. 5 at Dixie Speedway and on Sept. 6 at Rome Speedway in Rome, GA.

In other action, Don Jenkins was back on top this weekend, winning the Steel Head Late Model feature over Chuck Padgett. Jenkins goes into next weekend with a very healthy points lead. Jason Smith followed in third with Corey Roulette in fourth and Alan Brewer in fifth.

Heading into the final points races, only 10 points separate Chris Fennell (220) and Alan Brewer (210) for second.

Tom Maddox made a rare appearance at the speedway and took a big lead in the Crate Late Model feature to take the win. Current points leader Zach Pilcher followed in second over John Williams in third, Jake Jones in fourth and Matthew Turner in fifth.

The Crate Late Model championship is very much up for grabs going into the next weekend as 8 points separate leader Pilcher and Jason Smith.

Jerry Fowler took the Super Bomber feature victory ahead of Daniel Brewer and Randall Powell, who both put pressure on Fowler before settling for second and third. Ronnie Haynes finished in fourth, with Stephen Clack in fifth.

Dan Meadows scored the Economy Bomber feature win, as he took the win ahead of Austin Smith, Tyler Williams, Roy Patterson and Chris Neese.

No driver has been as dominate in many a year at Dixie Speedway as Hayesville, NC’s Jamie Cross. Cross took his 15th win of the season Saturday night trailed by Bo Jordan in second, Mitchell Pope in third, Denver Stepp in fourth and Jason Barrows in fifth.

In a special feature, a wheel was spun at the start of the evenings features to see which Division would be running for $1000 to win, and the Cruiser Division was the winner. After the checkers flew, the apparent winner was disqualified in post race inspection, giving the win and the bonus Edwin Scott. Randy Ledford finished second, followed by George Wilson in third, Jimmy Wilson in fourth and Stephen Smith in fifth.

Dixie Speedway will hold its final points race of the season on Saturday, Sept. 5. For more information, visit DixieSpeedway.com.
