Mill Creek makes most of first Dome trip, routs Brookwood

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter

ATLANTA — If ever there was a complete game from all three phases, Mill Creek's 42-7 destruction Saturday over Brookwood in the Corky Kell Classic at the Georgia Dome was it.

The Hawks, making their first-ever appearance in the Dome, got a touchdown from its special teams, its defense, and a revamped offense looked potent both running and passing the ball.

The defense set the tone early with two sacks on Brookwood’s opening drive and then the offense needed just three plays, capped by an 18-yard touchdown run from Daniel LeConte for a 7-0 lead barely two minutes into the game. LeConte added a 1-yard score a minute later for a quick 14-0 lead.

Except for a 59-yard touchdown pass from Brookwood’s Angelo DiSpigna to Dorian Miles midway through the second quarter to cut the Mill Creek lead in half, it was all Hawks.

The key play of the game came with 16 seconds left in the first half when Cameron Turley connected with Miles Riley on a 70-yard touchdown pass for  21-7 lead just before halftime.

Mill Creek held the Broncos to minus-8 yards rushing in the first half and 59 of their 87 total yards before halftime came on the one touchdown play.

The special teams blocked two kicks and scored one touchdown when Joe Thomas scooped up a blocked punt by Edmund Graham and raced 40 yards for a score and a 28-7 lead three minutes into the second half. Graham also blocked a Brookwood field goal attempt in the first half.

Moments later Turley and Riley Snyder combined for a 35-yard touchdown pass with 6:18 left in the third quarter and two minutes after that Aaron Anderson put the finishing touches on the victory returning an interception 66 yards for a score and the 42-7 lead.

Reserves for both teams played the fourth quarter but Turley, making his first varsity start, had 209 yards passing and two touchdowns. LeConte, expected to be the main cog in the Hawks’ ground attack, scored twice and had just under 100 yards in less than three quarters of work.

Brookwood finished with 242 total yards but had just under 150 yards from its starters against the Hawks top defensive unit.
